 For many families, back to school means stretching a tight budget  to make extra, necessary purchases. School supplies, clothing,  books, shoes, athletic equipment, and computers for one student  averages $674 according to U.S. News and World Report.  The  Back to School Clothing Drive has been reducing these costs for  Title I families in Arizona since 1967 by mobilizing an  extensive list  of partners, including AZ StRUT.

 AZ StRUT provided refurbished computers to 73 students who  completed one of six, on-site Techie Camps at the event held at  Grand Canyon University from July 15 - 20. In addition, we hosted  a Learning Experience table visited by hundreds of students and  parents who learned names of computer parts and tried putting  them together. The computer mother  board was a big hit.  "It looks  like a little city with houses and  buildings." Volunteer Kim  H. told  us that several students visited  the table and said, "I'm  going to  be a scientist because I love  computers!" Another said,  "I'm going  to be a programmer, and I  already know how to do it!"

 Thalya Nero headed up the AZ StRUT team who led the six Techie  Camps and shared some quotes with us. 

 "Thank you AZ StRUT and Back to School Clothing Drive. This was  a great experience. We learned a lot from taking apart the  computer!"

 "My kids rarely talk about learning activities. This was great!"

 "We had an amazing time. A great way to end summer before    school starts." 

 "My son and his friend said they had a good time, learned a lot and  received lots of good items, which I have not heard my son say in a  long time. Thanks."

 Janette Lopez, Director of Programs at the Back to School Clothing  Drive, wrote, "Our students had nothing but great things to say  about the Techie Camps and were so excited to receive a laptop.  Thalya was a ROCKSTAR. Thank you and your entire team."
