A million pounds of electronics is...a lot. Just ask Eugene and all of our employees and volunteer sorters who have lifted and sorted each pound. A million pounds is hard to visualize, so here are two things that weigh a million pounds or thereabouts:

• 40 school buses 
• The Union Pacific Big Boy, one of the largest steam locomotives ever built, weighed 1.2 million pounds with a tender full of water and coal

Yes. We've been very busy this year protecting our environment from hazardous materials and reusing or refurbishing all we can.

Techie Lab 

Partnership schools!
 

Back in 1998 when Intel and Motorola first started AZ StRUT, we had only one school partner. Every year we have continued to expand on our unique model. Each of our Techie Lab classes get free, hands-on learning materials all year long.  As one Techie Lab teacher said, "My students get so motivated when Rich, AZ StRUT Education Manager, brings us computers to work on. Students prefer to have real computers to work on rather than the normal virtual programs to learn hardware skills." Imagine that! Students want to work on REAL devices, not web based simulators. 

In addition to trouble shooting, students learn how to refurbish computers and feel satisfaction knowing that the computers they renew are given to students and non-profits who need of them. 

Fifty schools are now supporting the AZ StRUT mission.

UPDATE ON OUR NEW BOX TRUCK FUNDING

The over one millions pounds of electronics collected this year has taken a big toll on our 2007 box truck. We are in dire need of a new truck to continue picking up donations of electronics. 

Thanks to our generous supporters, we have received over $7,000 to purchase a new truck. We still have a long way to go to reach our goal of  $95,000.

We need more donations to help us keep our picking up donations at locations all over Arizona. All donations made before 12/31/24 are eligible for thank you gifts. Please consider helping us buy a new box truck.

AZ StRUT teamed up with volunteers from Desert Garden United Church of Christ to offer a Techie Camp to students from Thompson Ranch Elementary School.

CAREER EXPLORATION DAY 
 

Last month AZ StRUT hosted a new type of camp for LEAD AZ to introduce students to Career Exploration in technical fields. Learners took a facility tour, learned about our sustainability processes, took apart a computer and learned how to refurbish a computer. Thanks to their teacher Alfredo Rivera and positive experience, AZ StRUT will have an intern from LEAD AZ next semester.

WOMEN'S TECHIE LAB 

Every Saturday morning for six weeks, ten women from Fresh Start Women's Foundation attended Techie Lab, a program designed to boost computer hardware knowledge and trouble shooting skills. 

Each learner earned a refurbished computer to take home. Their goals are within their reach - cybersecurity, IT technician, software designer, health data analyst. Congratulations, Techie Women!
