FIRST EVER FAMILY TECHIE CAMP

"It was fun!” 

On Saturday October 20, five families from the Casa Blanca Community School attended a unique Techie Camp offered in partnership with Digital Connect, an initiative of Gila River Telecommunications, Inc.

Planning included incorporating Tohono O'odham language practice while learning about computer hardware. Families worked together to take apart a desk top computer and then rebuild it.

After rebooting the desktops successfully, all families received a desktop computer bundle to take home including monitors, keyboards and headphones. Families spent time learning about their new desktop, adding a password and enhancing their digital citizenship and online safety. 

Volunteers included youth leaders, Digital Connect staff, and Casa Blanca school teachers. 

Feedback surveys indicated that participants liked “learning to take the computer apart and put it back together,”  “small family groupings,” and the “hands on experience.”

WOMEN'S TECHIE LAB 

Every Saturday morning for six weeks, ten women met at Fresh Start Women's Foundation for a Techie Lab designed to boost hardware knowledge and trouble shooting skills. 

AZ StRUT gives each woman a computer at the end of the 12 hour program and stays in contact with them for a year to support their journeys. Congratulations to all ten of the women who showed us how techie they can be. We look forward to hearing about your achievements in the months to come.
